We thought you might be more interested in some of the behind the scenes activities going on in the Australian media industry as our industry works its way through COVID-19 now and setting themselves up for the future.

COVID-19 affected changes to TV Broadcasts:

  • Seven’s CEO James Warburton has asked staff to take a 20 per cent pay cut as part of a raft of new measures aimed at dealing with the coronavirus pandemic’s impact on business.

  • A Current Affair extends its broadcast to one-hour episodes from next week as Tracy Grimshaw hosts from home.

  • Georgie Gardner steps in to alternate hosting duties with Peter Overton for Nine News Special: Covid-19.

  • Melissa Doyle joins Michael Usher as a co-host of The Latest - COVID-19.

  • Nine expects to cut costs on Drama & Children’s TV by $266m this year to keep it afloat during already turbulent times for the network.

  • The Logie Awards drops award categories but will still go ahead later in the year.

  • Seven Network’s revamped Royal Flying Doctor Service series has been put on hold along with Home & Away.

  • ABC expands education schedule to support home learning during COVID-19 crisis.

  • Taronga TV will give viewers behind-the-scenes access during its shutdown with daily installments of educational videos to appear via tarongatv.com and their social channels.

COVID-19 affected changes to Newspapers/Online:

  • Nine Entertainment cuts its newspaper operations by suspending a string of newspaper sections and magazines, including Domain, BOSS, Sophisticated Traveller, Luxury, Good Food Magazine and Executive Style, with their content to be used by other magazines and newspapers at Nine.

  • News Corp Australia will pause production on 60 community newspapers from April 9. The mastheads will continue to publish digitally.

  • The Bunyip Newspaper has stood down its staff and will be closed indefinitely.

  • Stuff New Zealand will not print and deliver community newspapers and magazines for the next four weeks due to the level-four lockdown.

  • The Green Left Weekly has temporarily suspended print production but will continue to produce digital content regularly.

  • The publisher of Cape & Torres News, Corey Bousen, announced that they will return after the passing of COVID-19 thanks to the government's JobKeeper initiative.

COVID-19 affected changes to Radio Broadcasting:

  • Grant Broadcasters’ senior executive team will face a reduction in their base remuneration and a small number of redundancies have been announced to meet the current COVID-19 affected market conditions.

  • William Goodings and Melanie Usher join FIVEaa Drive Sports Show to share breaking news and local information on COVID-19.

  • 2ST's Dave Stretton was made redundant on Monday as part of Grant Broadcasters’ cuts to cope with the COVID-19 crisis.

  • Bathurst community radio stations 2MCE and 2BS / B-Rock FM have united to promote an ANZAC Day dawn service ‘letterbox’ commemoration.

  • Power FM’s Breakfast Show host Damon Adams creates School of the Airways to educate and entertain kids during the pandemic.

  • Radio Sports New Zealand closes down its programming and will syndicate Newstalk ZB content.

COVID-19 affected changes to Sports Broadcasting:

  • The A-League is looking for a new TV partner due to the COVID-19 pandemic as Fox Sports changes the aspect of how the company delivers programs and services.

  • An estimated $20 million is all that will remain of the NRL’s cash reserves if the season remains postponed for the rest of 2020.

  • NAB and ANZ have granted the AFL credit in a bid to help the league survive the pandemic.

  • Rugby CEO Raelene Castle has taken a 50 per cent pay cut on her $815,000 a year salary to help the game survive.
